About Milan

See the About Milan page for more information.

Milan is the most modern of Italian cities and the country’s economic center, yet it still maintains its link to the city’s 26 centuries of history. One of the biggest Gothic cathedrals in the world, the Duomo, sits at the heart of the city and is one of many great works that are scattered throughout Milan. The destruction caused by World War 2 provided an opportunity for the people of Milan to rebuild many parts of the city into a thriving business capital and transportation hub with the largest international airport, most railway connections, and the best subway system in Italy.

The Last Supper

Probably one of the most famous paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, this mural is located in a refectory near the Basilica di Santa Maria. Restorers are fighting a losing battle with time to preserve this work so it is hard to pass up an opportunity to see the Last Supper before it fades to history.

Duomo

This impressive Gothic Cathedral begun construction in 1386 and holds over 6 centuries of history. Exiting the Duomo metro station this structure easily captures the eye and imagination as it appears to be something taken from legend and fairytale. The Duomo is covered in pink marble and has over 100 spires and thousands of statues decorating its surface. If you have the chance, take a look at the Milan skyline from the rooftop of the cathedral, accessible by elevator during the day.

Musei Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia

Italy’s largest museum of science, the Museum of Science and Technology is housed in a 16th century monastery and houses over 10,000 items, including models of many of da Vinci’s drawings, Italy’s first submarine, and many interactive exhibits. This museum is where anyone of any age can find something to enjoy.

Museo del Novecento

The Museum of 20th Century Art housed in what used to be Mussolini’s Arengario, this multistory building that overlooks the Piazza del Duomo (Duomo Square) holds many great works of art. Any art or history lover will find that this museum can offer interesting look into Italy’s progression from Fascism through two world wars to the modern age through the eyes of artists that lived during that era.

Castello Sforzesco

Leonardo da Vinci is most remembered for his inspirational work in art and science, but many of the patrons that paid for his hobbies called on da Vinci to design implements of war, this castle is one such work that has lasted through time. Originally designed for the Visconti it later came under the possession of the Sforza dynasty, and even Napoleon saw its usefulness. Today the Castello Sforzesco houses seven museums showing Milan’s cultural history.
