IGARSS2013 World Cup

On Wednesday 24 July 2013, the annual IGARSS football mini World Cup was held at the North Melbourne Recreation Centre. Players were divided into three teams, Australia, Poland and France. It is worth noting that the team allocation was based purely on the jerseys available and that the Australian team had no Australians in it!

The teams played in a round robin format where the two top would play off in the final. In the group stage Poland proved the stronger side closing both matches out with 7:0 and 7:1 to secure a place in the final. Australia and France on the other hand played out a very tightly contested match which looked to be headed for extra time. The scoreboard read 1:1 with 58 seconds to go when one of the Australian team players scored a brilliant effort to seal the victory.

At the conclusion of the group stage all players and spectators enjoyed a well deserved break with various drinks and hot/cold food. The break also allowed for players and spectators to socialise. For the two teams in the final it served well for some last minute strategies.

The final was an extremely entertaining contest which ended with a draw 1:1 at half time. In the second half the Polish team showed resilience and fitness which allowed them to slowly control the tempo of the game. Goals were freely scored in 10 minutes which entertained the spectators. The final result being 8:5 in favour of the Polish team.

Football was played and new friendships were formed!
