Challenge Session Proposal Submission

Prospective Organizers are invited to submit proposals for Challenge Special Sessions at ICIP 2016.

Challenge Session Proposals are due through this site by October 30, 2015.

For a Challenge Special Session proposal to be considered for acceptance at ICIP 2016, the proposal should include the detailed description of an image/video processing or vision-related challenge in the form of a one-page Call for Visual Challenge Submissions, including motivation, requirements, evaluation criteria, selection process, submission deadline (need to be before or by 16 March 2016), and acceptance notification deadline (need to be before or by 30 April 2016). In addition to the one-page Call for Visual Challenge Submissions, the proposal should include potential groups and labs that will participate in the challenge.

A Challenge Special Session will be three hours long and will usually consist of 8 oral presentations. Other formats may be possible, including discussion panels and demos. The Organizers can specify their preferred Challenge Special Session format as part of the proposal. Top challenge performers will be given the opportunity to present their work as part of the Visual Technology Showcase in addition to presenting a talk about their work.

The following types of Challenge Special Sessions are especially encouraged:

  • Challenge Special Sessions that encourage reproducible research: in addition to the paper, the submission of the developed code/prototype is required for and evaluation of the work (possibly, executable code with detailed running instructions before paper is accepted and source code after paper is accepted).

  • Challenge Special Sessions that provide data sets as part of the challenge: part of the data set is publicly available for development and testing, and the other part is kept hidden to be solely used for evaluation by the Organizers.

Challenge Special Sessions will be intermixed with regular sessions during the conference. The number of accepted challenge special sessions will range between 2 and 4.

The Organizers' role is to publicize their challenge special session, invite (and ensure to have) a minimum number of 6 participants in addition to the uninvited/unsolicited submissions, process the submitted work (code/prototype) evaluation and paper reviews (with the same review system as the regular papers), and chair the session itself. The Organizers will share with the program committee the reviewer selection responsibilities, and the review process. Final accept/reject will be made by the program committee, in consultation with the Organizers.

Each participant in a Challenge Special Session will be required to submit a paper, under the regular submission requirements, by the challenge submission deadline. These papers will enter the same system as regular papers, and be subject to reviews. The Organizers will select the reviewers and manage the review process, and in consultation with the program committee, will make accept/reject decisions. For a Challenge Special Session to be successful, the Organizers should actively recruit high-quality groups to participate in their challenge session.

Participants with accepted papers as well as the Organizers will be required to register for the conference. Registration fees will not be waived and there will be no honoraria available through ICIP. Based on the Challenge nature, awards may be awarded to top performers based on support availability.

A maximum of 4 Organizers per Challenge Special Session is allowed.
